Sevai Attam

Sevai Attam, the Tamil folk dance is fully devoted to Lord Maha Vishnu and is being performed by the Tamil Nataka community. The artistes form a group and one of them dances as a buffoon to the tune of the special instrument, Urumi. The characteristic features of Sevai Attam include rendering of classical songs with simple body movements. In Sangam literature, Sevai Attam was called as 'Pinther Kuruvai' and was mostly performed at the back side of the chariot procession of the kings or God.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Siva once suffered Brahma hathya dosham, which prevented him to discharge his duties. The worried Devas along with Naratha Maharishi worshipped Sriman Narayana and explained the ill effects of dosham. Lord Vishnu changed his attire, wearing black coat, buffoon Kreedam, Naman in his forehead, big stomach, and Salangai in his feet, and danced in front of Lord Siva. Spellbound by the comedy performance of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Devas laughed continuously. Brahma Hathya also laughed and left the hands of Lord Shiva. Therefore, by his comical Sevai Attam, Lord Vishnu helped Lord Shiva relieving from dosham. It is believed that by seeing the artistes performing Sevai Attam, people will be relieved from all kinds of doshams.
